A New Beginning

Welcome to my blog on sports and why all sports can be better for fans.  My main sports interests are MLB and NASCAR, although I really enjoy NFL fantasy football.  I have been watching sports on TV and live since the 1980s (yes I am that old!) and lately have noticed two disturbing trends – overuse of advanced and often nebulous stats (I am looking at you MLB) and the swing to the TV audience as the primary target of all sports leagues.  I majored in math in university a LONG time ago and I am really looking forward to tearing into the advanced “stats” used to compare MLB players.  With all respect to sports journalists, most of them have very little math knowledge and just use these numbers as a hook to hang their stories on.  I hope you will be part of the discussion.  Two last things.  First, today’s classic rock song is “Kashmir” by Led Zepplin.  Second please follow Bob Nightengale on Twitter (@bnightengale) and give him some positive feedback.  Poor Bob gets less respect there than Rodney Dangerfield ever did!  If he announced that all the world’s problems were solved, someone would ask him why he took so long and why he was so negative.  You are a good man Bob!
